Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June to honor and acknowledge fathers and their significant role in the family, including men who serve as father figures. It is however not a public holiday.
“My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.” – Jim Valvano “The greatest mark of a father is how he treats his children when no one is looking.” – Dan Pearce
Origin Of Fathers Day
The idea of having a Father’s Day came to the mind of Sonora Smart while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. While many may believe that Father’s Day is celebrated as a way to sell greeting cards, the origins are much different. In fact, there are few early examples of Father’s Day celebrations before the holiday became a national one.
In 1908, the first Father’s Day celebrations were held following a horrific mining accident on July 5th of that year in Fairmont, West Virginia. To honor the fallen fathers and celebrate her own father, who had passed away in a similar event in 1896, Grace Golden Clayton helped orchestrate a service to honor the 360 who had died, as well as the 1,000 children left without fathers.
The first official Father’s Day was held in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. The idea spread and President Lyndon Johnson officially recognized the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966.
In Ghana and other parts of the world, the day is about recognizing the contributions of fathers to the upbringing of children and ensuring a unified family. Father’s Day is a special time to honor and celebrate the men who have played an irreplaceable role in our lives — our fathers, grandfathers, father figures, and mentors. It’s a day to appreciate their strength, love, sacrifices, and the quiet ways they show up every day. Celebrations in Ghana can include giving gifts, spending quality time with fathers, and sometimes even religious activities.
