Setup
Shuffle: Place all 28 dominoes face-down on the table and mix them up thoroughly. This is often called the “boneyard” or “sleeping tiles”.
Draw Hands: Each player draws their hand of dominoes. The number drawn depends on the number of players and the game variant:
2 Players: 7 tiles each.
3-4 Players: 5 tiles each.
Conceal Tiles: Players stand their dominoes on edge so they can see their own tiles but their opponents cannot.
Determine the First Player: The player with the highest double domino (e.g., double-six, then double-five) plays first by placing that tile in the center of the table.
Gameplay
Matching Numbers: Play proceeds clockwise. Each player must place a domino that has a number of dots (pips) matching one of the exposed ends of the domino chain on the table.
Placing Doubles: Doubles are usually placed perpendicularly across the chain, and new tiles can be played off their sides.
Drawing (Draw Game Variation): If a player cannot make a move with the tiles in their hand, they must draw tiles from the boneyard one by one until they find one that can be played.
Passing (Block Game Variation): In the Block variation, if a player cannot play a tile, they must pass their turn. No tiles are drawn from the boneyard.
Winning the Round and Scoring
The round ends when a player plays their last domino (going “out” or “chipping out”), or when the game is “blocked” and no player can make a move.
If a player goes out: The winner of the round scores points equal to the total number of pips remaining in all of their opponents’ hands.
If the game is blocked: The player with the lowest total number of pips remaining in their hand is the winner. They score the total of the pips in their opponents’ hands, minus their own remaining points.
Overall Win: The game is typically played in multiple rounds until one player reaches a pre-determined score, such as 100 or 150 points
